A survey by ISPreview has today cast light on the willingness of UK broadband users to pay an extra for superfast broadband speeds of up to 100 Mb per second. The survey claims that 51.5% of those questioned confirmed they would pay additional Internet charges for the extra speed although there is no consensus on what speeds are required in the UK.

A significant 24% of those surveyed believe they need speeds of 50 Mb per second or more, 21% believe 20 Mb per second is ample with 19% happy with speeds of around 10 Mb per second and 17% content with speeds of up to 8 Mb per second. There is an ongoing discussion in the UK market as to whether speeds of up to 100 Mb per second are actually required at the moment because of a lack of services on the Internet which would make use of these significant speeds.

It would appear that in some cases speeds available in the UK, or about to become available, have pushed ahead of technology and services available. There may well be a short-term catch up period during which time significant investment will be required from service providers on the Internet.
