The broadband industry has been dominated by the ongoing investment into high-speed fibre-optic networks throughout the UK which will see the UK broadband industry move to the next level. However, the high degree of investment required to improve current networks and current services has prompted some people to consider whether this will kill or at least reduce competition in the broadband sector.

The truth is that there are more than enough major players in the UK broadband industry to keep the degree of competition at a very high level although we could see a further polarisation of broadband services on offer. Many of the smaller players in the Internet broadband industry may well have to target specific niche markets to survive leaving the major players to attack the overall sector. This could actually inject more competition into certain areas of the UK broadband industry and hopefully lead to tighter pricing in the medium to longer term.

However, at some point UK broadband users will be asked to contribute to the billions of pounds required to upgrade the current broadband networks in the UK. But surely this is a small price to pay for the proposed increase in broadband speeds?
