Virgin Broadband today comes out on top in a survey which confirms that the average UK broadband speed increased by 22% in 2009. The average broadband speed in the UK now stands at 4.478 Mb per second as opposed to 3.67 Mb per second in December 2008. This is a significant increase and many believe the UK broadband sector, and broadband in general, is set to enter a new growth phase in the short to medium term.

However, those who subscribe to Virgin Broadband may well already be aware that the average connection speed for the company has increased to 7.426 Mb per second. This is a significant increase on the previous year and when you consider that second place is shared by Be Broadband and O2 broadband with an average speed of 5.143 Mb per second, the improvement in Virgin Broadband is there for all to see.

While Virgin Broadband speeds match the 22% improvement seen across the UK, it is Plusnet (with an improvement of 28%) and BT (with an improvement of 24%) which top the most improved broadband speed chart. Competition is intensifying in the UK and while download speeds have improved dramatically there is still much work to be done on upload speeds.
