A number of UK Internet service providers have today confirmed a surge in Internet usage during the general election campaign. This will come as no surprise to those in the industry who are well aware that the instant results available online as well as various video streaming options are certainly catching the attention of UK broadband users.

There is no doubt that the UK broadband sector is now an integral part of the UK political scene, with many political parties using cyberspace to grab voters. However, unfortunately we have also seen the darker side of the Internet with a number of allegations surfacing regarding smear campaigns during the run-up to the election. While this is obviously the downside of using the Internet to attract the attention of UK voters but there is very little that can be done to stamp this out completely.

The ability to simply click on a website and see the current state of play at a glance, especially with the knife edge situation we find ourselves in at the moment, is something which more and more people are appreciating. Rumours and counter rumours are evident on the Internet with regards to potential coalition tie-ups although we should find out for definite in the coming days.
