As the new coalition government gets to grips with the UK broadband industry there is speculation that we will see the appointment of a new broadband Minister in the next couple of days. While this is not exactly top of the list with regards to David Cameron’s agenda in the short term, there is no doubt that broadband is something which needs addressing and clarification is required as soon as possible. So what can we expect?

It will be interesting to see whether the new government carries on with the Labour party policy of looking to introduce 2 Mb per second broadband across the UK, something which was to be funded by a new broadband tax. However, the Conservative party had indicated it was looking for to cancel the broadband tax in favour of partially funding the UK broadband industry from BBC licence payer income. So far there’s been no indication about the government’s plans for UK broadband industry but we are likely to see some developments sooner rather than later.

There is no doubt that broadband is a vital component of the UK business arena going forward and proving more and more popular amongst consumers up and down the country.
