It has been revealed that the UK government is currently considering plans to increase and expand the U.K.’s wireless broadband network. This would involve significant investment in next-generation wireless networks and also improvements in 3G coverage across the whole of the UK. It is reported that the ultimate aim is to ensure that 90% of the UK population have access to mobile broadband services which would take some of the pressure off the ongoing fibre-optic network which is currently being built.

Many people believe that mobile broadband is in fact the UK government’s best option to increase Internet activity and Internet coverage around the UK and today’s news has been well received by the sector. However, this will not be a short-term situation and will instead require significant investment in the short, medium and longer term to ensure that mobile broadband services are able to support increased usage and also improve their reliability.

This together with the ongoing creation of the UK fibre-optic network should push the UK higher up the worldwide broadband league and indeed assist small, medium and large companies in the long-term. Even though the UK has fallen behind other developed countries in certain aspects of the broadband industry there is no doubt there is now a rush to try and close the gap.
