The UK government has this week said that it would adopt a more Conservative approach to the UK broadband arena with the cost of the future funding to come from the BBC licence fee. It would appear that the Conservative party has won the battle with regards to future funding as the Liberal Democrats had suggested a similar move to that proposed by Labour which would have seen the introduction of a broadband tax. So what can we expect for the future?
It seems as though the UK government will be working very closely with British Telecom, currently rolling out a superfast broadband network across the UK, to ensure that as many urban and rural areas as possible are able to access superfast broadband in the future. However, there are still concerns about the reliability of broadband speeds in the deep countryside of the UK, an area of the market which has been effectively ignored for some time.
While these are only broad outline plans from the government we should see more details emerge in the weeks and months ahead although with the budget deficit obviously top of the agenda it is difficult to put an exact timescale on any announcements.
