In a disappointing development for the UK broadband market it has been revealed that with an average download speed of just 3.5 Mb per second the UK is now 26th in the world ranking report produced by Akamai. Even though this position is likely to change as and when the UK government and British Telecom roll out the superfast broadband network planned for the UK, the margin between the UK and South Korea (in top spot) is enormous with South Korea posting an average broadband speed of 14.6 Mb per second.
Japan is in second place with an average speed of 7.9 Mb per second which reflects the massive investment by the South Korean government into the world of technology. There is no way in the foreseeable future that the likes of the UK can in any way compete with South Korea which is continually working on new technology which puts the UK, Europe and the rest of the world to shame. However, it would be wrong to suggest that there has not been any progress in the UK but perhaps the UK authorities woke up to the idea of the Internet later than many?
It will take a massive investment by the UK authorities and the UK broadband sector to reduce the gap which has widened over the last few years.
