An unofficial index of broadband speeds around the world has placed the UK in the 33rd position with average speeds only just above the global average. These figures were compiled by broadband metrics group Ookla and while they are unofficial they will not make good reading for the UK authorities and UK broadband users.
As you might expect, the index, which examined over 1.5 billion broadband records, places South Korea at the top of the broadband speed index with average downstream speeds of 34.19Mbps. Many people may be surprised to learn that Latvia came second at 24.3Mbps with Moldova, Japan and Sweden behind them. However, how does the UK compare to the likes of South Korea?
Unfortunately, although we have to remember these figures are unofficial, according to this index the UK average broadband speed is a lowly 7.69Mbps, which is around one fifth of the speed available in South Korea. However, there is no doubt that the next few years will see the UK broadband network grow significantly and broadband speeds will improve dramatically. Whether the UK will actually be able to keep pace, and hopefully better, the future increase in speeds around the globe remains to be seen.
