While there has been much mention of superfast broadband speeds in the UK over the last 12 months the reality for the vast majority of internet broadband users is very different. SamKnows, the official technical partner of Ofcom, has been benchmarking UK Internet broadband providers for some time now and the results have been a little disappointing to say the least.

Despite significant investment into the UK broadband sector there has been little improvement in actual broadband speeds since April 2009 with the vast majority of UK broadband users still experiencing speeds of between 3Mbpsand 4.5Mbps. However, the next 12 months is likely to see a dramatic change in the UK broadband landscape with a significant improvement in broadband speeds expected across the UK.

As a consequence SamKnows is looking for consumers to sign up to its broadband measurement program which will give a detailed analysis of broadband speeds across the UK for an array of UK Internet broadband providers. Volunteers who sign up to the program will be able to monitor the performance of their own broadband service provider and become part of the wider community which will have significant input regarding not only broadband speeds but also ISP service levels.

Ofcom is looking to focus upon following ISPs:-

    AOL
    BT – ADSL
    BT – FTTC (Infinity)
    o2 / Be
    Orange
    Plusnet
    Sky
    TalkTalk
    Virgin Media

although every ISP which has signed up to Ofcom’s voluntary code of conduct will also be included.
