O2, the UK mobile network operator, has begun to roll out testing of the company’s long-term evolution technology (LTE) which in theory could see mobile broadband browsing speeds of up to 150 Mb per second. While there is still some work to do in this particular field there are high hopes for the LTE technology which could revolutionise the O2 mobile broadband service.
Despite the fact that the UK broadband industry would appear on the surface to be running behind many of its major competitors overseas, we have seen some significant developments over the last few months and there has been an improvement in overall broadband speeds in the UK. It will be interesting to see how competitors of O2 broadband react to this move as there is obviously much at stake now and into the future.
For many years mobile broadband has been seen as the future of the UK broadband sector although unfortunately, due in the main to a lack of investment in the short term, this potential has not yet been realised in full. However, there are signs that UK consumers are now starting to warm to the idea of mobile broadband and reliability issues have been addressed in various areas of the sector.
