O2, which was formerly part of the British Telecom empire but is now owned by Telefonica, has revealed plans to attack the UK fixed line telephone market. This would place the former BT operation at loggerheads with the former state run giant and could highlight a significant weakness in BT’s mobile broadband and mobile telephone services.
Since it was taken over by Telefonica, O2 has made great strides and attracted the attention of a large number of new UK customers and it has high hopes of increasing its fixed line market share. If the company can grab a significant chunk of the fixed line telephone market this has the potential to dramatically change the fortunes of O2 and push the company back to the pinnacle of the UK broadband market.
When the company was known as Cellnet, in its BT days, it had something of a mixed reputation hence the reason why the change of name to O2. However under the guidance of Telefonica the company is very different today and one which is proactive rather than reactive and looking to become a major player in the overall UK telephone and broadband market. Hopefully consumers will benefit as the company grows and technology continues to advance.
