Over the last few weeks there has been a definitive split in the music industry with regards to how to protect copyrighted material from illegal downloads and piracy. While initially a number of people had suggested a, “three strikes and you are out system” for those caught downloading illegal material, there has been a sea change over the last few weeks towards a less aggressive and less ominous system. However, it would appear that many in the music industry still favour the “three strikes and you’re out system” and have illegal filesharers in their sights!
The new idea is that two warning letters would be fired off to those found downloading copyrighted material and if these are ignored then upon the third time of being found downloading copyrighted material, they would have their Internet connection “throttled”. This will effectively slow down the speed at which they can access the Internet to a level which would not allow them to download large files, therefore protecting copyrighted material.
The protection of music and other copyrighted material is proving more and more difficult in the new online arena with many people are prepared to take the risk that they could be caught out and could lose their Internet connection.
