A recent report into mobile broadband services in the UK suggested that the vast majority of users were only able to access speeds at anything from 25% of the advertised broadband speed. While this is not a new accusation to be aimed at the mobile broadband sector, where speeds can vary substantially depending upon how far away you are from a transmitter, it does seem to have annoyed many mobile broadband providers in the UK.
However, it has to be said that while many people are still unable to reach the top speed mobile broadband figures quoted in the press, there has been a significant increase in the reliability of UK mobile broadband and an increase in general speeds. Conscious that mobile broadband customers could leave the sector en masse unless the information is portrayed in a more straightforward fashion, there have been significant changes.
Many people are frustrated by the speed at which mobile broadband in the UK has developed when compared to overseas markets where double-digit speeds are commonplace. Quite why the UK has been relatively slow in increasing mobile broadband speeds in general is something of a mystery because it’s certainly not for lack of investment with billions upon billions of pounds poured into the sector over the last few years.
