The UK government’s antipiracy bill will come into play in 2010 and see significant costs added to the UK broadband sector. However, it is the minority who regularly partake in online piracy who are spoiling it for the rest who live a law-abiding life online. So is it really fair for the majority to foot the bill for illegal activity by the minority?
In the past we have seen content companies such as movie and music conglomerates attempting to take individuals to court when they have been found to be illegally sharing or illegally downloading files. However, on a number of occasions it has been obvious from the very beginning that many of these people have very little funding available and it has turned out to be a waste of time and money to take through the courts. As a consequence, the UK government has now stepped in and it looks as though UK consumers as a whole will foot the bill.
Despite the fact that the UK government has been under pressure from Internet service providers in the UK that some time, it appears that the cost of online piracy will be spread amongst all broadband users for the foreseeable future.
