Google is currently considering a number of test sites in the US which will host the company’s superfast broadband service which could eventually be rolled out across the globe. However, there are concerns within the industry that without regulatory limitations Google could quite literally dictate how people access the Internet and what content they are provided with. So what next?

Such is the clamour to become part of the Google operation that a town in America has quite literally changed its name to “Google” for a month in order to attract the attention of the search engine giant and hopefully secure a position in the test program. This perfectly reflects the growing strength of Google and the growing requirement for superfast broadband round the world.

If the US test program proves to be successful there is no doubt we will see a similar service rolled out across the UK and other parts of the world. This will not only inject significant competition into the UK broadband arena but could also prove to be something of a regulatory nightmare for the UK authorities. For some time regulators around the world seemed to ignore the ever-growing “cyber world” but now there is a need to clamp down on companies such as Google which appear to have far too much influence.
