While BT broadband is at the forefront of the UK broadband sector and the creation of a nationwide fibre-optic network, the company is still under significant attack from competitors. It is widely known that many customers initially left BT when the broadband sector began to increase although more and more of these appear to be returning back to the company. However, companies such as Virgin Broadband and TalkTalk Broadband are placing more and more pressure on BT Broadband and claiming increasing market share.

There is no doubt that BT broadband has been there to be shot at for some time but the company has increased its profile and its level of customer service over the last couple of years. The introduction of the nationwide fibre-optic network will be a major stepping stone into the future even if the company will need to give competing ISPs access to the network. There is no doubt that BT broadband does have a battle on its hands to retain its market share but the company appears to be more forward-looking and techno-friendly than ever before.

It is highly likely that the UK broadband sector will see significant consolidation in the short to medium term with smaller operations struggling to cope with increased costs and likely to become part of larger broadband providers in due course.
