Car manufacturing giant Ford has this week announced plans to introduce in-car broadband in the United States with speculation rife that a similar service will soon be introduced to the UK. Ford has a very high penetration level in the UK car market and in-car broadband is something which would be welcomed by UK consumers and could eventually shake up the UK mobile broadband sector.
The company has been working on an updated version of its own in car entertainment and communications system which would effectively make the car a “hot spot” of its own. More and more people are now looking to connect to the Internet on the move and the ability to do so directly via your car is something which Ford has taken very seriously. While we wait for further details about the United States venture there is the growing speculation that the UK could also be in line for a similar service – something Ford have not refuted!
Effectively using mobile broadband connectivity in the UK, the potential impact upon companies such as O2 mobile broadband, Orange mobile broadband, BT mobile broadband and the other leading mobile broadband companies in the UK could be enormous. More competition in this particular area of the broadband sector is just what the doctor ordered and UK broadband users could well be in for a treat in 2010!
