While we often see many people criticise the UK broadband sector it is only right to point out that while over 10 years ago there was no access to broadband in the UK, the country now has more access as a proportion of the population than countries such as France, Germany and even the United States. The estimated 65% take-up of broadband in the UK also beats the likes of Japan which has for many years been at the forefront of the worldwide broadband sector.

However, while broadband use in the UK continues to rise and the sector remains as competitive as ever, apparently there are still many areas of the UK which still do not have access to high-speed broadband Internet connectivity. This is an issue which the UK government has been attempting to address for some time but one which may require significant investment and potentially alternative broadband service considerations such as mobile broadband and in some places even satellite broadband services.

The lack of broadband connectivity in some areas of the UK is impacting upon local communities and local businesses and effectively reducing the size of their marketplace. There is a need to ensure that broadband connectivity will be available in all areas of the UK in the future but how long this will take remains to be seen.
