The Conservative Party has today hit back at the government, ridiculing its promise of a minimum 2 Mb per second broadband speed across the UK by 2012. The Conservative Party would appear to have taken the lead in broadband discussions promising delivery of a superfast broadband network by 2017 which would be capable of delivering broadband speeds of 100 Mb per second.

It is believed that the scheme would be part funded by the BBC licence fee although detailed funding proposals have yet to be released. There is no doubt that over the last few years it has been the Labour Party which has stolen a march regarding broadband but as we approach the election it seems that the Conservatives have finally realised that broadband is set to play a greater and greater role in the UK economy.

If we are to believe the headlines coming out of the political arena it seems that the UK broadband sector is on the crest of a wave which could finally see the UK catch up with overseas competitors. However, talk is cheap and more and more people are now demanding action on this very critical area of technology.
