BT chief executive Ian Livingstone has hit back at the UK government’s attempt to push through the Digital Economy Bill before the next election and the various clauses which it contains. It is common knowledge that illegal file sharing will in the future result in customers having their accounts terminated although there is concern within the broadband sector about any legal right of appeal. There are also concerns about the rollout of superfast broadband on which the BT chief executive has his own opinions.

There is a growing belief that while superfast broadband will be available to the vast majority of the UK population in just a few years time, it may need additional public sector investment to roll this out into some of the more rural areas of the UK. It looks almost certain as though taxpayers money would be required to complete the superfast broadband network and ultimately take the UK into the higher league of broadband enabled countries.

While the current government, the Conservative party and other political parties would have you believe that public sector investment may not be required to complete the new broadband network in the UK this would not appear to be the case in reality.
