BT broadband has this week revealed that on 9 December the company signed-up its 5 millionth broadband customer in the UK and has very high hopes for the future. The customer in question was presented with a trip to the Winter Olympics with BT looking to maximise publicity for this very significant milestone.

However, BT broadband has been the leader in the UK sector for some time purely and simply because of its history and former monopoly of the industry. Those who believe the company will have “everything its own way” in the short, medium and longer term may need to think again because the likes of Virgin broadband, Sky broadband, TalkTalk broadband, Plusnet broadband and other broadband companies in the UK are not going to sit back and let BT broadband dictate the long term direction of the market.

At this moment in time there is no doubt that BT broadband is leading the way with the creation of the U.K.’s first nationwide superfast broadband network but this is a system which will be open to all competitors in due course. Depending upon who you speak to, many believe that BT has received an easy ride from the regulator although others feel the company is still subsidising its competitors at the moment.
