A recent report has indicated that WiMAX (or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access), the leading wireless technology provider, is set to infiltrate the Indian broadband market in a big way – with a forecast of 27.5 million users by the year 2012.
The study by the WiMAX forum has predicted that about 70% of users will use mobile or portable devices to access and use WiMAX. This report is surprising due to the recent news that India failed to meet its broadband policy makers target of nine million broadband users by this year, with the actual figure of those with broadband access at 3.4 million. It is hoped that the growth of WiMAX in India will help to meet this target in years to come.
According to the study, WiMAX looks set to grow due to innovative return on investments thanks to its wide range of services, along with the economies of scale involved because it is a mobile provider, it can reach a large number of people from just a few cables and transmitters. The president of the WiMAX forum, Ron Resnick, said yesterday that “India is clearly making the commitment and taking steps to ensure wireless broadband services are a reality that enable operators to meet the needs of India’s diverse and growing population”
This conveys the positive outlook that the company has for this new development.
