British Telecom Broadband has today revealed plans to increase the speed of its broadband service from 8 Mb per second to 20 Mb per second in areas of the UK which can support the company’s ADSL 2+ technology. The fact that the potential broadband speed upgrade is free has attracted the attention of many UK consumers (with other providers) who are struggling to reach advertised broadband speeds in many areas of the country.

The company is focusing upon business broadband customers initially, starting today, although the service will be rolled out to its 4.8 million private users in the weeks and months ahead. This is one of the strongest signs yet that British Telecom Broadband is making a major play for both business and the consumer sector. The recent reorganisation of many assets in the UK broadband sector, which has seen AOL acquire Tiscali and other rumoured moves, has prompted action by the telecom giant.

After initially falling behind many broadband competitors in the UK there is no doubt that BT broadband is now one of the more popular broadband services across the country. The company’s ongoing investment into the fibre-optic network and technologies such as ADSL 2+ is starting to pay dividends.
