BT broadband has finally confirmed an upgrade for over 40% of UK homes and businesses which will see their broadband speeds increase from around 8 Mb per second to 20 Mb per second in “enabled areas”. The company had been stalling somewhat on the expected upgrade but is now able to compete directly with the leaders of the UK broadband market, although Virgin Broadband with its 50 Mb speed is still pushing the envelope further back.

After much consideration, BT is also set to release a new gadget which the company believes will reduce electric interference in the home which can in some circumstances reduce broadband speeds. The so-called BT Broadband Accelerator has attracted a range of differing opinions since it was first announced although the company is adamant that in some circumstances it can add as much as 1.5 Mb per second to broadband speeds.

Over the last few months, since the onset of the nationwide broadband network, BT has been rarely out of the headlines with regards to the UK broadband industry. This ongoing drip feed of positive news has increased the company’s presence in the market place and put the company back in the public eye once again. As the nationwide broadband network continues to evolve it seems as though BT will be grabbing yet more headlines in the short to medium term.
