In a move which could see broadband speeds of between 1 GB and 10 GB per second hit the UK over the next few years, the UK government has confirmed a £1 million development fund has been set up. The money is being used to fund up to 13 different projects which are looking to develop and improve current broadband technology and delivery speeds.

However, the development of broadband speeds in the UK hinges on a national fibre-optic network, one of which is available through Virgin Broadband and the other which is being set up by BT as we speak. The additional funding will also allow a number of UK broadband technology companies to collaborate with their European counterparts and hopefully speed up the process of improving broadband technology across Europe.

Now that the vast majority of the UK population has access to at least dial-up, if not broadband, connectivity there is a growing demand for more reliable services and faster speeds. However, as we covered in of our recent post it is highly likely that the business market and the consumer market will uncouple themselves in the years to come with different speed requirements for each area.
