As the UK broadband market becomes ever more competitive there is a serious dispute raging between BT and Carphone Warehouse. The battle is over who is the U.K.’s leading broadband provider with Carphone Warehouse now suggesting, after the recent acquisition of the Tiscali UK broadband operation, that it has more residential broadband customers than BT. However, BT has disputed his claim and the fight goes on!
While Carphone Warehouse is trying to claim top spot in the broadband league, BT has released figures showing it has 4.7 million broadband customers in the UK against Carphone Warehouse’s expanded 4.3 million customer base. However, Carphone Warehouse believes that a significant proportion of the 4.7 million BT broadband customers are business users thereby justifying its claim to be number one in the UK residential broadband market. So who is right?
BT has so far refused to divulge the number of business customers included in the total of 4.7 million broadband connections but the pressure is growing. Even if the Carphone Warehouse is only number two in the UK broadband league it has grown substantially in a very short space of time and will no doubt be among the leaders for some time to come. Does it really matter who is number one?
