There are very few industries n the world which are seemingly recession proof but broadband seems to be one of the very few that even comes close. News has reached the market, via an Ofcom sponsored survey, that the total number of broadband connections in the UK currently stands at 16.2 million and growing. So is the broadband industry really recession proof?
While in the real world no industry is recession proof there is no doubt that broadband is fairing a lot better than the vast majority of industries around the UK. However, whether this is due to the fact that broadband services are now as cheap as the old telephone line service or broadband continues to grow in popularity is unclear. What is clear is the fact that even in the face of what is turning into a serious economic downturn the interest in broadband has never been higher. It does actually beg the question of what level of take up we would have seen in the UK had the economic slump not hit home?
One element of the market which does seem to be changing on an almost daily basis is the balance between fixed line broadband and mobile broadband with the later now well within reach of the vast majority of consumer.
