Zen Internet has revealed plans to offer free upgrades to its 20 Mb per second Internet broadband service for existing and new customers. While not all customers will be able to access the top speeds it has been shown that average speeds of between 9 Mb per second and 13 Mb per second are readily available although some customers close to their local BT exchange could touch the top speed. The new service is possible because old BT exchanges have been upgraded to ADSL 2+ which currently supports speeds of up to 24 Mb per second.
There is however some controversy regarding the time span for switching Zen Internet customers to the quicker service, with the company suggesting that access to BT engineers is causing some delays while BT is suggesting that all customers could be moved over within two months. This is an interesting development for Zen Internet customers and further reflects the advances being made by British Telecom in the field of broadband Internet connectivity and the fact that BT competitors who use the network are also benefiting.
It will be interesting to see how many BT customers “jump ship” as competition in the UK broadband sector continues to increase.
