In an interesting development it has been revealed that the average UK broadband speed is now in the region of 4.137Mbps against a figure of 3.2Mbps just a year ago. At a time when UK broadband providers have continued to come under pressure for advertising headline rates which have until now been unachievable for many in the UK, it would appear that progress is certainly being made.

While a 4Mbps broadband speed may not sound extravagant or even impressive to some, the fact that the average speed in UK is now over this level is a significant breakthrough. As ever, until broadband delivery technology is improved, your location in the country and how far you are from your nearest telephone exchange will dictate the broadband speeds currently available to you. However, as work continues on BT’s national fibre-optic network, and customers continue to flock towards Virgin Media’s fibre-optic broadband network, there is certainly progress being made in this area.

However, in order to focus investment on relevant areas, and services for the future, many experts believe that we will see a significant reduction in the number of mainstream broadband service providers in the UK, as we have seen in the UK mobile phone sector. Who will survive and who will lead the way is very much open to debate.
