As you would expect, the vast majority of fixed line and mobile broadband companies are focusing their efforts on the larger towns and cities of the UK with rural broadband nothing but a pipedream for many in the countryside. However, it seems as though many in the countryside are prepared to go the extra mile and there are reports of groups digging their own trenches in order for companies to lay broadband connections to various far-flung communities.
Many people had expected mobile broadband to be the answer to rural broadband connectivity but so far the quality has been questionable to say the least and many appear happy to take the situation into their own hands. The UK government has been paying lip service to broadband connections in the countryside although so far that little finance has been made available and more and more groups in the countryside are being proactive rather than reactive.
While many will mock the so-called “yoghurt knitters” who have taken the situation into their own hands, it cannot be overstated as to the difference broadband will make not only for local communities but local businesses. The ability to connect at high-speed to any area of the world and effectively market your goods and services is something which is priceless for a small business.
