While Gordon Brown has taken many of the headlines in relation to the UK broadband network it would appear that work is well underway in Scotland to ensure that broadband (and eventually super broadband) will be more widely available across the country. Finance secretary John Swinney has this week revealed that 4000 extra homes and businesses throughout Scotland have already benefited from the government policy to roll out broadband more densely across the country.
The Scottish government probably have more hurdles and potential problems than any other part of the United Kingdom because of the differing degrees of population density from the barren lands of North Scotland to densely populated areas of Southern Scotland. While there have been no financial figures released in relation to the Scottish broadband program it is highly likely to come under the overall banner of Gordon Brown’s “UK broadband program”.
The introduction of broadband across Scotland will now allow more and more businesses to communicate quicker and more efficiently with their counterparts all round the world. This is a vital element of the Scottish economy going forward as broadband has allowed many companies around the world to cut their base costs. As the broadband network throughout Scotland continues to grow this is sure to attract the attention of more and more UK broadband providers.
