A survey by Ofcom has shed some light on a situation which many people seem to have ignored for some time. Apparently of the 40% of the UK population who do not have access to broadband services, 50% of this group do not actually want broadband in their homes. This is a rather surprising statistic and one which has apparently gone unnoticed for some time. What does this mean for the UK broadband industry into the future?
While at this point in time it would appear that a larger section of the UK population, than first thought, do not require broadband, the future will be very different as broadband continues to take over the UK economy and local communities. Even though there are no details of this 20% band that do not require broadband, there is speculation the vast majority is made up of the older generation of the UK population.
However, while the UK broadband industry has increased dramatically over the last few years, these figures indicate there is still a substantial “new market” out there which is untapped and will come online in due course. There is no doubt that broadband is here to stay and broadband will play a larger and larger part in each of our everyday lives.
