As the Digital Britain report continues to be digested by the broadband sector, MPs on the Commons Business and Enterprise Committee have announced yet another review of the UK broadband sector. Amid claims that there is much talk and little action, do we really need another review of the UK broadband sector after such a comprehensive and detailed report from the Digital Britain team?
The fact that the MPs will look at the government’s target of 2 Mb per second broadband speeds in every area of the UK as well as the 50p a month per landline broadband tax would appear to cast doubt on the findings and proposals contained within the Digital Britain report. The UK government’s target of 2 Mb per second broadband speed throughout the UK by 2012 is seen by many as “ambitious” which does not bode will compared to the South Korean government which has set a 1 Gb per second broadband speed target for its home market!
While the UK appears to be keeping pace with its European counterparts there is no doubt that the Far East is still head and shoulders above any other area of the world with regards to broadband speeds and broadband technology. Surely the UK authorities and UK Internet service providers can in some way tie-up with their Far East counterparts to replicate these highly impressive broadband speeds, now becoming more commonly available throughout Asia.
