He may be on the ropes, he may be struggling to control his party but Gordon Brown is still putting the kids first with news that he will today announce a package which will see disadvantaged children receive free access to the internet via broadband in the future.

While we have yet to see the details of the plan it looks as though homes in the poorer areas of the UK where money is tight and computers and internet access are well down the agenda will receive financial assistance from the government. The package is forecast to cost around £300 million and will see around  £700 made available to qualifying homes in order to bring many struggling kids up to date with the latest technology.

The funds will be used not only to acquire computing equipment and broadband services but to access support services to ensure that the estimated 1.4 million school children without internet access are able to push ahead with their school studies. However, as with any political initiative the devil will be in the detail which we should see later this week.

Bringing the internet to the workforce of tomorrow is vital if they are to stand a chance of succeeding in what is a quickly changing world.
