As worldwide governments continue to try and get to grips with the sudden outbreak of swine flu, which originated from Mexico, many people are thankful that the Internet is available today. While there is no doubt that the potential pandemic which could materialise has repercussions for many areas of the world, the Internet would appear to have a major part to play in the future.

Whilst in years gone by governments would have depended upon the news and media coverage, the power of the Internet and broadband connectivity now offers access to our homes 24 hours a day seven days a week. At the click of a button you can gain access to all of the latest advice from government departments, travel information and ongoing outbreaks. However, more importantly the Internet has given governments around the world direct access to billions of people offering advice which should at least slow down the spread of the virus and make people more aware of their responsibilities.

There are many areas of life where Internet monitoring, especially by governments, is highly questionable but the ability to hit billions of people with vital information with just a tap of the key could be the difference between a short-term outbreak of swine flu and a potential pandemic.
