In this new age where carbon footprints and green issues are very much all the rage, with governments introducing new taxes month by month to assist with saving the environment, where does the Internet stand?

While the Internet has been criticised on numerous occasions there is a growing feeling across the world that the World Wide Web is actually environmentally friendly. But is this correct?

When you consider the millions upon millions of televisions, radios, videos and other media devices which are switched on each and every day there is potentially significant energy savings to be made by using the Internet instead. How many times have you watched a news program to see a specific item or switched on the TV to wait for a specific television programme?

The Internet now allows you to search for specific news items and news articles and the ongoing development of TV online (otherwise known as IPTV) will also integrate OnDemand television which could potentially slash energy bills around the world. While Google recently received severe criticism for a claim to reduce the carbon footprint of many users, there is certainly method behind the madness of using the Internet as opposed to other traditional media services.

Who would have thought the World Wide Web could actually be environmentally friendly!
