A report by Screen Digest has highlighted a potential problem for the mobile broadband sector amid suggestions that popularity in the short term is beginning to wane. The report suggests that customers who signed up to early mobile broadband contracts, many of which were two years in length, will soon be seeing their contracts end. There is a growing feeling that at least some mobile broadband providers in the UK have been unable to deliver on their promises with mobile broadband speeds and network coverage amongst the two major areas of concern.

As a consequence, when the first band of mobile broadband customers see their contracts up for renewal there is a suggestion that many will snub mobile broadband until the technology improves, speeds move higher and network coverage is better. While there have been significant improvements and steps forward in the mobile broadband industry there is a feeling that perhaps the technology is not quite there yet and the reliability factor is not as many people expected.

It will be interesting to see how the mobile broadband providers react to this potential drop-off in popularity and demand and how much they’re willing to invest in new technology and new services even in these times of economic hardship.
