We have seen a number of headlines in the press of late with regard to broadband service expenditure in the UK with some parties suggesting that consumers are either downgrading their service or else looking to reduce their use in the short term. However, there appears to be little evidence of this new trend on the high streets of the UK with many broadband providers confirming continued expansion, although new customer signups have slowed of late.
There are also concerns that BT will try to delay the much publicised multibillion pound investment into a fibre-optic broadband network although the fact that Ofcom has not ruled on BT’s request to increase the cost of broadband bandwidth to competitors has not helped the situation. Until BT is aware either way it seems unfair to expect the company to commit to a massive future expenditure at a time when corporate UK and worldwide markets are struggling.
As we have covered on earlier posts, many experts in the field of broadband have been suggesting that the UK government should offer more financial assistance, tax breaks and promote the use of broadband in both business and the domestic market into the future.
